Għar Dalam Cave
Għar Dalam
Malta · Birżebbuġa
In brief
Cave excavations have revealed numerous fossils belonging to Malta's Ice Age animal communities. The upper cultural layer contains evidence of Early Neolithic human use and the introduction of domestic animals to the island.
What was found?
- 1Dwarf elephant fossils
Bones of small-bodied elephants were found in the cave's fossil-bearing layers. They are important for investigating the reduction in size of large mammals under island conditions.
- 2Hippopotamus fossils
These are the remains of hippopotamuses that do not live in Malta today. They show how different the island's past animal communities were from those of today.
- 3Deer bones
Deer remains are also present in the cave's stratigraphic sequence. They contribute to comparisons of animal communities from different periods.
- 4Early Neolithic cultural layer
The upper cultural layer contains evidence of human use of the cave. Heritage Malta associates this phase with Early Neolithic communities that brought domestic animals from Sicily.
What does it point to?
The layers of Għar Dalam preserve the animal world before human use and later Neolithic life as separate phases. The fossils make the effects of isolated life on the island visible, while the upper layer reveals the arrival of people with domestic animals.
What did it teach us?
- It documented that elephants, hippopotamuses and deer lived in Malta in the past.
- It provided fossil evidence of changes in animal body size under island conditions.
- It made it possible to distinguish Early Neolithic human use from older fossil accumulations.

- Scented cosmetics identified in 2,000-year-old graves in Kazakhstan
Analysis of white blocks recovered from two women's graves revealed traces of cinnamon and other plant oils mixed with chalk. According to the researchers, the materials show that scented oils transported along the Silk Road were used in local cosmetics production.
Arkeofili ↗ - Molecular evidence of aloe use found in a 2,700-year-old mummified head
Chemical analysis of a mummified head dating to the 8th century BC detected compounds associated with aloe. According to the researchers, this is the first molecular evidence of aloe use in ancient Egyptian mummification and adds to knowledge of the ingredients in embalming mixtures.
Arkeofili ↗ - Possible communal bone repository containing remains of nine people found in Mexico City
Human bones, Aztec-period pottery and obsidian tools were found during a rescue excavation ahead of railway construction. According to the researchers, the bones may have been collected from earlier graves and reburied; the find, whose exact date has yet to be determined, could shed light on funerary practices in the area.
Heritage Daily ↗ - SS dog kennels and ash layers containing bone fragments found at Dachau
Excavations at Dachau Concentration Camp uncovered the foundations of at least 35 dog kennels and ash layers containing bone fragments. According to the researchers, the bones may be human remains from the crematorium; the finds provide new physical evidence of the camp's security and crematorium layout.
