United States · New Mexico
In brief
Pueblo Bonito is one of the most extensively researched great houses in Chaco Canyon. Cacao residues in excavated cylindrical vessels have enabled research into connections with distant regions.
What was found?
- 1Great house complex
A large complex of buildings planned and constructed in stages by Ancestral Pueblo people. It documents the architecture at the center of the Chaco world and prolonged building activity.
- 2111 cylindrical ceramic vessels
111 cylindrical vessels were found in a single room; most have black designs on a white background. According to researchers, their unusual shapes and find contexts indicate ceremonial use.
- 3Ceramic fragments with cacao traces
Theobromine was identified in three fragments selected from refuse deposits and thought to belong to cylindrical vessels. This chemical trace is direct evidence of cacao use.
What does it point to?
The vessels and cacao residues show that Pueblo Bonito was a center connected with distant regions. According to researchers, the use of cacao, which did not grow locally, in special vessels suggests that ceremonial ties may have accompanied the exchange of goods with Mesoamerica.
What did it teach us?
- Established through chemical residues that cacao was consumed in Chaco.
- The arrival of a tropical product at Pueblo Bonito added new evidence of connections with distant regions.
- Showed that ceramic fragments from earlier excavations can provide information about use through new analyses.
