In brief
Teos near Seferihisar is an Ionian city known for its sanctuary of Dionysus. Current excavations investigate the sacred buildings as well as the council house and surrounding public architecture.
What was found?
- 1Temple of Dionysos
This is the temple at the center of the Sanctuary of Dionysos. Attributed to Hermogenes by the ancient architectural writer Vitruvius, the building allows ancient texts and architectural remains to be studied together.
- 2Sanctuary propylon
This is the monumental entrance building of the Sanctuary of Dionysos. Thanks to new fragments of its Latin building inscription, researcher Musa Kadıoğlu established the building's date as 3 BC rather than 5 BC.
- 3Bouleuterion
This is a meeting building associated with the city council. Excavations and architectural studies investigate its use and its changing functions over time.
- 4Three-winged portico
This is a colonnaded structure consisting of three wings adjoining the bouleuterion. Studying it together with the council building helps explain the relationships between the city's public buildings.
What does it point to?
The temple and monumental entrance show the prominent place of religious life in the city's architecture. The inscription bearing Augustus's titles documents this sanctuary's connection with Roman rule, while the bouleuterion and portico reveal spaces devoted to communal urban life.
What did it teach us?
- New inscription fragments made it possible to correct the dating of the propylon to 3 BC.
- The propylon's Latin inscription and Corinthian capital document the arrangement of the sanctuary during the Augustan period.
- Studying the bouleuterion and its adjoining portico together allows the changing functions of public buildings to be assessed.
