In brief
Cliff Palace is an Ancestral Pueblo settlement built within a rock shelter at Mesa Verde. The site has a history of excavation and conservation and lies within the boundaries of the Mesa Verde National Park World Heritage property.
What was found?
- 1Multistory stone rooms
The stone buildings set within a rock alcove contain rooms designated for living, storage, and other activities. The room layouts show how everyday tasks were distributed spatially within the settlement.
- 2Kivas
Large circular rooms built partly underground. According to researchers, they may have been used for ceremonies and social gatherings.
- 3Colored plaster and wall painting
White plaster, a red border, and red triangles have survived in a tower room. These directly show that Ancestral Pueblo people decorated interiors with color and geometric patterns.
- 4Wooden structural beams
Original wooden beams have survived in some rooms. Their annual growth rings allow construction and renovation phases to be dated.
- 5Vessels and everyday tools
Excavations uncovered complete vessels, wooden agricultural tools, a stone axe with its handle preserved, and grinding stones. These objects provide concrete information about diet, agriculture, and craftwork.
What does it point to?
Cliff Palace indicates a living space organized for food storage, production, and communal gatherings as well as shelter. According to researchers, the abundance of public spaces suggests that it may also have been a gathering or administrative center for surrounding communities.
What did it teach us?
- Showed that cliff settlements consisted of planned spaces assigned to different functions.
- Enabled the dating of construction and modification phases through the tree rings of the timbers.
- Showed, according to researchers, that not every room should be considered a dwelling and that the settlement also had public functions.
