Akrotiri
Ακρωτήρι
Greece · South Aegean, Santorini
In brief
Akrotiri is a prehistoric city preserved beneath material erupted by the Thera volcano. Systematic excavations have revealed multistory buildings, household objects and rich wall paintings.
What was found?
- 1Wall paintings
The paintings decorating the walls of multistory buildings survive sometimes in place and sometimes in fragments. They provide a rich visual source for studying the art, clothing and social life of the period.
- 2Ceramic vessels and household objects
Numerous vessels and everyday objects were found in public and private buildings; the contents of some vessels were also preserved. They allow food storage and domestic practices to be studied.
- 3Traces of organic objects in the ash
Organic objects and architectural elements that decayed and disappeared left cavities in the volcanic material. Plaster casts of these cavities can recover the shapes of the objects.
- 4Painted kymbe vessel
This is an unusually shaped vessel decorated with wild goats, dolphins and crocuses. Its precise purpose is unknown; according to researchers, it may have been associated with special, perhaps ceremonial, occasions.
What does it point to?
With its buildings and objects preserved beneath volcanic material, Akrotiri shows Bronze Age urban life in detail. Wall paintings, vessels and traces of organic objects reveal advanced building knowledge and a rich visual culture.
What did it teach us?
- They showed that multistory buildings, stone-paved streets and a sewer system existed within the same urban layout.
- They revealed that volcanic deposits could preserve the forms of everyday objects lost elsewhere.
- Studying wall paintings and vessel decoration together allowed a more detailed understanding of the period's visual world.
