Suleiman I was the tenth sultan of the Ottoman Empire. In the West he is known as Suleiman the Magnificent. He ruled from 1520 to 1566, about 46 years. No other Ottoman sultan reigned longer. If you are planning a trip to Turkey, his name will follow you from the Istanbul skyline to the TV in your hotel room. This guide separates the sourced record from the drama.
Who Was Suleiman the Magnificent?
His father was Selim I, known as Yavuz. His mother was Hafsa Sultan. He was born in Trabzon, on the Black Sea coast. Even his birth date is debated. The Turkish Religious Foundation’s Encyclopedia of Islam (TDV) uses 6 November 1494. The same entry notes that the chronicler Mecdî gave April-May 1496.
Ottoman princes governed provinces before they ruled. Suleiman was sent to Kefe as governor in 1509. In 1513 he moved to Manisa in the same role. He took the throne on 30 September 1520, after the death of his father.
He was also a poet. His main pen name was Muhibbî. He also signed poems as Muhib and Meftûnî.
Where Did Suleiman the Magnificent Rule?
He ruled the Ottoman Empire from Istanbul. His armies pushed in several directions. Belgrade fell in 1521. Rhodes fell in 1522. On 29 August 1526 the Ottoman army defeated the Hungarian army at Mohács. King Louis II of Hungary died in that battle. In 1529 Suleiman besieged Vienna. The city was not taken.
Inside the empire his name became tied to law. He worked with Şeyhülislam Ebussuud Efendi. Together they supported bringing the sultan’s own laws into harmony with Islamic law. This work is why Turkish speakers call him Kanuni, the Lawgiver.
Suleiman the Magnificent’s Wife and Wives
Two women shape his family story. Hürrem Sultan was his legally married wife. TDV records her as his wedded wife, a formal marriage with a contract. Mahidevran was the mother of his son Şehzade Mustafa. These two women and their sons are the core of the palace rivalry you see in the TV series.
Suleiman the Magnificent’s Children
Hürrem bore the sultan five sons: Mehmed, Abdullah, Selim, Bayezid and Cihangir. She also bore a daughter, Mihrimah. Before Hürrem, Suleiman already had sons. These included Mahmud, Murad and Mustafa. Mustafa’s mother was Mahidevran.
The family story took a dark turn. In 1553 Şehzade Mustafa was executed on his father’s order. When Suleiman died in 1566, the throne passed to Selim II, a son of Hürrem.
Suleiman the Magnificent’s Siblings
Suleiman grew up with six sisters. TDV lists them as Beyhan, Fatma, Hafsa, Hatice, Şah and Hanım Hatun. Two siblings died young. Şehzade Salih died in 1499. Kamerşah Sultan died in Trabzon in 1503. Both were children.
How Did Suleiman the Magnificent Die? The Cause of Death
Suleiman died on the night of 6-7 September 1566. He was on campaign, during the siege of Szigetvár. By the widely accepted 1494 birth date he was 71 years old.
You will read online that he was poisoned. The sourced record does not support that. In 2020 Norbert Pap and Máté Kitanics published a study in the journal Osmanlı Araştırmaları. They attribute his death to an illness that cannot be identified. They name no poisoner.
Suleiman the Magnificent’s Tomb
His body was brought back to Istanbul. He was buried in his tomb beside the Süleymaniye Mosque. When you stand in that courtyard, you stand at the grave of the longest-reigning Ottoman sultan.
There is a second site. At Szigetvár, where he died, the remains of a tomb, a mosque and a dervish lodge have been found. They came to light step by step. Norbert Pap told the Turkish agency TİKA the order: the tomb remains in 2015, the mosque in 2016 and the dervish lodge in 2017.
Suleiman the Magnificent Series: The TV Show
The series is Muhteşem Yüzyıl, known in English as The Magnificent Century. It aired from 2011 to 2014. Halit Ergenç played Suleiman.
Keep one thing in mind while watching. The series dramatizes Hürrem, Mahidevran and Mustafa. The dates above are the documented frame. The dialogue is fiction.

Details you won’t find in guidebooks
His death was kept secret. After he died at Szigetvár, the news was hidden. On the return journey the court behaved as if the sultan were still alive.
He was not called Kanuni in his lifetime. According to TDV, the title appears in Cantemir’s history in the 18th century. Ottoman historians made it common in the 19th century.
His princely household was large. A document on his Manisa retinue from 1513 records 458 servants.
A jewelled helmet went on public display in Venice. A four-tiered helmet studded with jewels was made for him. In 1532 it was shown to the public at the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a print of the sultan wearing it.
The Szigetvár dig had a strict order. Tomb remains first in 2015, then the mosque in 2016, then the dervish lodge in 2017.
